The Adafruit VL53L1X breakout (also known as VL53L1CX) measures distance by laser time of flight, with a range of up to about 4 m and LIDAR-like precision. A tiny invisible laser and matching detector time how long light takes to bounce back, so it reads only the surface straight ahead, which is ideal for robots and interactive projects.

Key features

  • Approx. 30–4000 mm range
  • Narrow sensing cone, unlike the wide spread of ultrasonic sonar
  • More precise than reflected-light IR sensors, with no linearity problems or near/far confusion
  • Regulator and level shifting for any 3–5 V microcontroller
  • I2C with STEMMA QT / Qwiic connectors

Specifications

  • Sensor: ST VL53L1X
  • Range: Approx. 30–4000 mm
  • Interface: I2C
  • Power and logic: 3–5 V (the sensor itself runs at 2.8 V)

Works with

3.3 V boards such as Feather and Raspberry Pi, and 5 V boards such as Arduino Uno. Also Arduino, CircuitPython and ESP32.
